As they drive away from the reservation towards the city, Checkers reaches out to touch the galloping horses. When the band left the last time, for the concert in Seattle, she didn't go along because the horses still held her.

False, the horses didn't hold her back, the horses are the souls of the indians past that will follow them anywhere they take there indian herritage. In the begining of the book Big Mom talks about the horses screaming because they were the past indians that got killed.
